The root holds a plant to the ground. It sustains and is the foundation of the whole tree. Similarly the base chakra or the root
chakra is the foundation of our life and is concerned with our basic survival needs as well as our material needs including wealth,
prosperity and abundance.

The pattern of how our survival needs are met is shaped during childhood and remains even after we break the dependency on our
care-givers, namely our parents. If we are brought up to consider our basic needs as necessary, we develop a healthy attitude with
regard to ourselves and the way we treat ourselves.

On the other hand take a simple example of a bigger child snatching a toy from a younger child. In this instance the younger child will run to his parent and ideally the parent should maintain trust with the child by giving the child back what belongs to him. If the parent does not and this pattern is repeated many times, the child will have trust issues as he gets older. Not supporting the child also conflicts with the basic safety need required for the healthy growth of a child. Simple acts as these result in mistrust and fear which are root chakra imbalances.

An unbalanced root chakra can manifest as problems in the immune system, reproductive organs, feet, leg, rectum, tailbone, and prostate gland. The root chakra controls the adrenal glands and organs in the lower abdomen as well as the rectum and kidneys. Hence an out of balance root chakra causes diseases like constipation, sciatica, arthritis, anorexia, obesity, eating disorders as well as pain in the lower back, knees and joints. Osteoporosis and other bone and skeleton disorders find their origin in a blocked root chakra as well as auto-immune disorders, frequent illness, fibromyalgia, obesity and weight problems.

On an emotional level a block in the root chakra results in a lower self-esteem, emotional dependency, defensive attitude, tendency to procrastinate, inability to focus on a single task or a lack of career direction. Feeling unsettled, chronic fatigue, feeling unsupported, unable to “let go” of people, places, things – all point to a root chakra issue.

Root chakra issues are mostly physical and the an appropriate way to deal with them is through physical action. Martial arts, Tai chi, walking, running, yoga and gardening establish our connection to the earth and keep us grounded – basic requirements for healing the root chakra.

To make things happen in the physical world, we draw our energy from the root chakra. One of the main functions of the root chakra is to solidify, to make real. The base chakra is essential in manifesting any idea, dream or concept. The desire to act, to do, to move is the expression of the energy of the root chakra. An inability to manifest material abundance into one’s life is a sign of a root chakra imbalance.
Our means of survival – food, shelter, light, money are supplied by others. This makes us habitually fearful as we fear these can be taken away from us. Constant fear manifests itself as stress. Depending on the personality of a person, stress and fear show up either as aggression or withdrawal and efforts of help are perceived as a threat. Staying in a constant state of stress and alertness, causes an emotional burnout and results in poor motivation. Poor motivation is one of the main features of insufficient energy in the root chakra.
The root chakra is located at the spine at the tailbone. it’s element is the Earth and the color is red. It is often symbolised by a square. Since its element is the earth, it most related to the physical body.
and is the most dense. To heal the root try walking barefoot on the grass or stomping your feet. As the root chakra is associated with the color red, including red foods in your diet will help balance the root chakra. Red foods and foods that grow in the ground include foods such as, carrots, potatoes, parsnips, pomegranates. Red foods would also include red meat and eggs. Spices like pepper nourish the root chakra.
The root chakra must be well balanced so that we can anchor and use the spiritual energy for our well-being and development. It gives us the energy and the motivation needed to put to good use whatever resources are available.

The Weight-Loss Chronicles 4: Chocolate & the Sacral Chakra

In between the belly button and the tailbone is the Sacral chakra. If you are a belly weight gainer, figure out if it is below the naval or above. If you get the little belly below you have a Sacral story going on with you.

Chances are that you like chocolate – a lot! If you have a sweet tooth and any sweet will do and you don’t like chocolate much then wait for the next chapter on the Solar Plexus 🙂

The Sacral chakra is about Creativity and Creation, Sex and Sexuality, Fertility, Joy, Pleasure & Abundance. Think about these words and see where you find the lack or the struggle. It is possible that Creativity flows though you but Joy alludes you.

Scientists have proven that when we eat chocolate it releases the pleasure hormones in our brain. If our word is lacking in pleasure, we crave chocolate because our natural or ideal state of being is about being happy, creating and about pleasure. Pleasure itself has an offshoot of pleasing – are you pleasing yourself enough? Or are you constantly putting all your efforts in pleasing others?

None of this means that chocolate is bad. Chocolate is great because it is giving your body what it needs. But wouldn’t it be amazing that your mental and emotional state was so full of pleasure that you would not need that much chocolate. Please don’t force yourself to stop, it will happen on its own as the chakra corrects itself.

The chocolate connection is an indicator that the sacral needs correction. The other indicator is the weight gain in the lower belly area. Simple affirmations are a great way to start and so is wearing crystals. Incidentally, the other thing that releases the happy hormones is exercise 🙂 No escaping that no matter what chakra you work on. Do a little walking, try a minute of running, if you couple that with some affirmations the results will be quite phenomenal.

The Carnelian is the best sacral chakra healing stone. I have noticed that it takes me a little while to get accustomed to the stone (yes, the sacral is my story 🙂 ) so I start by wearing it for an hour or so and slowly build it up to the full day.

Other crystals that benefit the sacral are moonstones and mother of pearl and rubies. Rubies I find the easiest to wear actually. And I prefer the tumbled version to the faceted Jewelry kind. Rule of thumb is that if the crystal is orange in colour it will work on the sacral chakra. Wearing the various shades of orange helps as well. You just realized that you really like the colour orange right?! That’s your body telling you your needs:)

Here’s a set of affirmations that work well for the sacral –

See which one resonates with you the most and go with that. 21 times for 21 days or longer.

Do remember to cleanse your crystals and activate them.

The Weight-Loss Chronicles 3 – Base Chakra & Weight

Now that you have reassured your body that you are safe, it’s time to identify where exactly the fear lies. The simplest and most effective way is to figure out where you start putting on weight. Is it your thighs? Is it your stomach? Or your lower belly?

Lets take this chakra by chakra, starting with the base chakra or the root chakra

Legs, thighs, hips

If your tendency is to start putting on weight here or that this is the only place you put on weight, this is where your body and mind think you need most protection.

The base chakra is a materialistic, physical chakra. It is about the basic necessities of life. It is about how safe you feel, how secure you feel. It is not about whether you have or have not, but about how you feel about it. So you can have plenty but if you feel insecure about it, it causes the body to layer up.

Most people with base chakra blocks will come across as rather materialistic. But if you scratch the surface, you’ll see that they are just using physical things (and that includes money) to just feel safe.

And it still could be about love or money or any of the other chakra issues, as long as the emotion is about feeling fear or insecurity. If love makes you scared – you would fight or flight. So small hips and skinny legs run away from intimacy and the broad hips fight it.

Same with money – if money means power to you then we’re talking about the Solar Plexus chakra and not the Root chakra. If money means safety and security then we’re talking about the Root chakra.

A lot of the Root chakra issues actually relate to finances, because money pays our rent and buys us food. But the issue is not actually money or lack thereof, it’s the insecurity for what money can or can’t buy.

And it is how rich people can be fat around the base as well. Think about how insecure you would feel if you had a million bucks lying around in the house, you would be paranoid right? It’s contradictory but the less you have the less insecure you feel. Think about it. If your bag was full of cash, you would constantly keep an eye on it but if it had almost nothing, you would just toss it anywhere.

SO – the action to take is

1. Understand yourself : Figure out what you fear or what makes you feel unsafe or insecure. See if you feel overly dependent on things and maybe even hoard things.

Thighs usually mean attachment and intimacy. So, do you fear attachment with people? It not only mean a partner but could be friends or even family. Somewhere in the past you were hurt and now you are afraid to open up to people. A good affirmation is ‘It is safe for me to form attachments. It is safe for me to be intimate with so and so’.

Hips are about dependency. If you fear being dependent on people or alternately feel that too many people are dependent on you. Again this is about resisting it and fearing it because you have been hurt by it in the past, which is why your body is protecting you. Affirmation – It is safe for me to depend on people or a specific person.

Shins and Calves are about cushioning. And Ankles are about Support. But one doesn’t actually start putting on weight from there 🙂

Another way of figuring out what you fear is to see what the weight in that particular area prevents you from doing. And then do it – it’s a sure way to get over the fear :). Can’t wear that Bikini? – just go ahead and wear one!!

2. Do some affirmations : Once you have figured it out usually an affirmation which starts with ‘It is safe for me to…’ should be a good start.

If you don’t want to or can’t figure it out, a generic ‘I am safe, I am secure, I am protected’ is a great affirmation.

3. Add lots of Reds, Browns and Blacks to your wardrobe. Especially the bottoms. Should be easy enough to do and all of them are slimming colours!

4. Try carrying some crystals in your pocket or even wearing it around your neck. For material fears try the Red Jasper. For safety, try a tourmaline or a black onyx. For fears of health it’s a moss agate.

5. Try to walk barefoot on the grass atleast once a day. If not, walk barefoot in your apartment but visualize it is the ground.

And go for a walk or go for a run 😉

One last thing. Sometimes when we try to change something that has been part of us for a long long time, there is backlash. Its just your energy which is not used to the new you. But don’t give up, it’s just testing you to see if you know what you’re doing.  So you wear the Bikini and someone laughs at you or calls you overweight – don’t worry, just do your affirmations. Remember that your body and mind believes that you will be hurt and creates that situation for you. Just continue on and sooner than later it will accept the new you.

Chakra Basics

Started writing the next chapter of Weight Loss Chronicles and realized that it needs a note on the chakras first. One can write infinitely about the chakras and now looks like this post will go into the chapter format as well – what fun! :). Root:
Located at the base of the spine this chakra represents our roots, our grounded-ness, our connection to the earth. Our basic survival needs and instincts reside here. The urge to fight or flight, the roof over our heads, all our material wants and desires.
At the physical level, when this chakra is not working to it’s optimal it affects the feet, legs, the base of the spine and the coccyx area. At the metaphysical level it’s malfunction can cause financial or material problems.
For enhancing well being of this chakra, wear the colours of the earth i.e. reds and browns. Use deep red earth crystals like the red jasper.

Sacral:
Our pleasure chakra, located above the root and below the navel. Joy, creativity and procreation emanate from this chakra. When it whirls freely we open ourselves to the pleasures of life, surround ourselves with beauty and enjoyment.
This chakra affects our sexual organs, the kidneys and the hips.
To allow joy into your life surround yourself with vibrant orange. Wear jewelry with carnelians.

Solar Plexus:
In between the navel and the heart is our solar plexus chakra. This is the seat of our power and control, confidence and self esteem (just think about the butterflies in your stomach before a presentation!)
Stress and lifestyle diseases hit us here. The stomach, liver, pancreas and middle vertebrae are affected by this chakra.
Bright happy yellow is the colour of this chakra and the effervescent citrine the crystal to balance it.

Heart:
No points for guessing this one. Brimming with love, heartfelt thanks, heart going out to someone in pain – in the centre of the chest, this chakra is about love, compassion, gratitude and forgiveness.
It extends from the heart to the arms, right down to the hands.
Use pinks and greens to activate this chakra. The beautiful rose quartz is the perfect crystal for this chakra.

Throat:
We use this chakra for expressing and communicating. It helps expressing love or creativity, communicating with confidence or kindness. It affects the throat, neck, esophagus, thyroid.
This chakra responds to pure blues. The aquamarine is a great crystal for this chakra.

Third Eye:
In between our brows is our third eye chakra, our minds eye. It is responsible for vision, insights strategy and their successful implementation. Balancing this chakra helps the eyes, ears, nose and the neurological system.
Use indigo for this chakra, the colour and energies of the lapis Lazuli

Crown:
Just as the root is our connection to the earth, the crown is our connection to the divine. Faith and connectedness, in a higher power, in humanity and in yourself are the keywords here.
It is the existence chakra therefore relates to the pituitary gland and the central nervous system. When this chakra is in imbalance one feels frazzled and disconnected.
Violet or pure white are the colours of an enlightened being. Use a clear quartz or an amethyst to balance this chakra.

 

Trust & The Solar Plexus

Third chakra from the bottom is our Solar Plexus. Our seat of Power & Control. And how much in power and control we feel is a measure of how much we trust. In a sense it is paradoxical relationship between the two. The more we trust, the lesser we feel the need to control and by default feel more in control. Power too is related to both control and trust. We use power tocontrol what we are unable to control. Would we need power if we had trust? Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi had (and still do) power over millions but would we call them powerful men? If we have trust the other two simply become redundant.

While looking for an appropriate pictorial quote for this note, I came across so many quotes on trust. The internet is a vast space and this is the first time I have come across so much bullshit in .028 seconds (according to google). Each and every one of the quotes was about, how easily trust is broken (compared to a second, a crumpled piece of paper) or how you should trust in god but lock your car. And even as I realize that if that’s what I’m seeing, I really need to work on my trust issues , I still think it’s bullshit. How can it take a second to break years of trust? All that means is that when it came to the test of trust – you failed. And if doubt sets in after thats just a spiral downward. Sure it feels safe to be protected but you only put the armour on when you expect to be attacked, right? And it’s the same with God and the car. It seems like an oxymoron – trust but don’t trust!

As a friend pointed out recently, if you have trust, if you can trust, then life is sorted isn’t it? It is the flip side of love. Faith. belief, expression hinge on it. You feel completely safe. It really would be a utopian planet wouldn’t it. But the .028 seconds of google search time proves quite the opposite.

The tough question then is the how to? And it is as easy as choosing to. And it is as difficult as walking naked on the street. Because having trust means showing your true self, exposing your underbelly so to speak. Just writing about it is making my solar plexus palpitate (seriously!).
The only thing to do is to say ‘I trust’ till you do!
