The Laughing Buddha

lau buddhaIn Japan, a great mystic, Hotei, is called the laughing Buddha. He is one of the most loved mystics in Japan, and he never uttered a single word. As he became enlightened, he started laughing, and whenever somebody would ask, Why are you laughing? he would laugh more. And he would move from village to village, laughing.

A crowd will gather and he will laugh. And slowly — his laughter was very infectious — somebody in the crowd will start laughing, then somebody else, and then the whole crowd is laughing — laughing because…. Why are they laughing? Everybody knows, “It is ridiculous; this man is strange, but why are we laughing?”

But everybody was laughing; and everybody was a little worried, “What will people think? There is no reason to laugh.” But people would wait for Hotei, because they had never laughed in their whole life with such totality, with such intensity that after the laughter they found their every sense had become more clear. Their eyes could see better, their whole being had become light, as if a great burden had disappeared.

People would ask Hotei, “Come back again,” and he would move, laughing, to another village. His whole life, for near about forty-five years after his enlightenment, he did only one thing and that was laughing. That was his message, his gospel, his scripture.

And it is to be noted that in Japan, nobody has been remembered with such respect as Hotei. You will find in every house, statues of Hotei. And he had done nothing except laugh; but the laughter was coming from such depth that it stayed with anyone who heard it and triggered his being, created a synchronicity.

Hotei is unique. In the whole world there is no other human being who has made so many people laugh — for no reason at all. And yet, everybody was nourished by the laughter, and everybody was cleansed by the laughter, felt a well-being that he had never felt. Something from the unknowable depth started ringing bells in peoples’ hearts.

Kavisho, if you can go without looking back at all, passing through the unknown into the unknowable, where everything will be lost — questions, answers, me and you — all that remains is pure existence, infinite and eternal. And I am saying it because it is possible. You have come a long way with me.
Thousands of people have come with me, and somebody drops out after a mile, somebody drops out after the second mile; I don’t complain about them, I just feel sorry for them. They were not courageous enough. There came a point where they stopped.

But you have been like many of my sannyasins — going without any fear, risking everything. There is every possibility that you will be one of those very few fortunate ones who attain to the ultimate truth.

Before you come to the laughter of Hotei, start laughing more and more deeply, more and more madly. This joke is just for you, Kavisho:

A young couple have been trying for ages to have a baby, but with no success. Finally they decided to go to the doctor with the problem. After a detailed interview he suggests that maybe they should not make love every day, to avoid love becoming a routine. They should make love only spontaneously. Not as if they have to do it, but only when they are possessed by it.

“You have to find the right, spontaneous moment,” the doctor says, “when you feel the moment is right, do it.” A few months later, sure enough, the woman is back and the doctor confirms her pregnancy. “May I enquire if my advice was of any help?” “Oh, doc,” she says, “it was terrific. We were having a romantic candlelight dinner with french wine and soft music, and suddenly our hands met. We were looking deep into each others eyes and we both knew, `this is it!’ We simply threw off the tablecloth and made love right on the table.”

“Amazing,” says the doctor. “Yes, it was great,” she says, “the only sad thing about it is, that we can never go to that restaurant again.”

Awake and Enlightened

Follow-Me-Buddha-Paintings-SOLD-

to be awake
is to be aware

to be awake
is to be able to see
not with your eyes
but with your heart

to be awake is to perceive
all as you are
all as yourself

to be awake is to see time
not as it moves forward
but as it stills

to be awake is to walk
backward to the point of origin
to retrace so you can understand

to be awake is to feel
the infinite patterns of the universe
and how you are a part of them

to be awake is to surrender
to the will of the universe
to be one with the universe

to be enlightened
you don’t even need to wake

Love is the ultimate freedom

Love

Love is the ultimate freedom. It is not a chain to bind you but the bond that can set you free.
Love is.
And there is no isn’t. There is no if, but, when, it just is.

There is no conditionality to love. And there is no unconditionality to love. Unconditionality is a condition too.
Love just Is.

There is no proof of love. It just is.

The Weight-Loss Chronicles: Chapter 2 – Thank your Fat

thank-you-wallpaper

In chapter one, we discussed the reason for weight – fat and thin. Now with that perspective, take a step back and see why does fat exist in our bodies. (And no, it’s not there to torture you:) ) Quite the opposite actually. It’s there to protect you. You know that sea mammals have this really dense layer of fat which protects them from the cold water. The key word here is protection – our fat exists because it believes that it is protecting us.
All the little hurts and the big ones – emotional not physical – makes the mind want to protect itself and as the body is the physical manifestation of the mind, that’s where the fat shows up.
This doesn’t mean that thin people don’t get hurt, it just means that their response is to run from the emotion. The people who fight the emotion layer up on the fat for protection.
So when you are feeling vulnerable or unprotected your body starts putting up it’s protection. The first thing to do is affirm to your mind and body that you are safe. A lovely affirmation is –
‘I am safe. I am secure. I am protected’
All the better if you can visualize your safe place while doing the affirmation.
The second exercise to do especially while getting into bed is to talk to your fat. Place your hands on your solar plexus and start by thanking your fat, thanking your body, for being so considerate to you. Mind you – this is love talk so no abuses, rudeness or sarcasm. You body knows when you are being genuine. So talk to your body as you would talk to a 2 yr old.
Thank it for protecting you and keeping you safe. But also let your body know that you are alright now and you don’t need the protection anymore. That it is alright for the fat to melt away now. Use your own words, just make sure they are soft, loving, positive words.
Affirmations work best when done for 21 days, with a minimum of 21 times. I mostly do them through the day.
Go on try it till the next chapter on the Chakras & Weight

Be the Lake

An aging Hindu master grew tired of his apprentice complaining, and so, one morning, sent him for some salt. When the apprentice returned, the master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it. “How does it taste?” the master asked. “Bitter,” spat the apprentice.

The master then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake nearby. Once the apprentice swirled his handful of salt in the water, the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.” As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the master asked, “How does it taste?” “Fresh,” remarked the apprentice. “Do you taste the salt?” asked the master. “No,” said the young man.

At this, the master took the young man’s hands, offering, “The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains exactly the same. However, the amount of bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things . . .Don’t be a Glass, Be the Lake.”

Possibilities

possibilities

Possibilities. How I love that word. It’s been one of my favourite words for some time now, right up there with magic, mystic and rhythm. And now that I think about it – it is similar in it’s nuance.

We had a discussion about choices, conclusions and certainty. When things happen and when they don’t. The most amazing thing about things not happening is the possibilities it opens up. And here comes the magic rushing in 🙂

You break up with somebody and now there is a possibility of someone super amazing to come into your life. You lose a job and here’s the possibility of the job of your dreams happening. Or something else. Just be open to the magic of possibility.

Shiva’s Song ~ Chidananda

Shiva

Shiva

I am not mind, nor intellect, nor ego,
nor the reflections of inner self.
I am not the five senses.
I am beyond that.
I am not the ether, nor the earth,
nor the fire, nor the wind.
I am Shiva, that eternal knowing and bliss,
love and pure consciousness.

Neither can I be termed as energy,
nor five types of breath
nor the seven material essences,
nor the five coverings.
Neither am I the five instruments of elimination,
procreation, motion, grasping, or speaking.
I am Shiva, that eternal knowing and bliss,
love and pure consciousness.

I have no hatred or dislike,
nor affiliation or liking,
nor greed,
nor delusion,
nor pride or haughtiness,
nor feelings of envy or jealousy.
I have no duty,
nor any money,
nor any desire,
nor even liberation.
I am Shiva, that eternal knowing and bliss,
love and pure consciousness.

I have neither virtue nor vice.
I do not commit sins or good deeds,
nor have happiness or sorrow,
pain or pleasure.
I do not need mantras, holy places,
scriptures, rituals or sacrifices.
I am none of the triad of the observer
or one who experiences the process of observing or experiencing,
or any object being observed or experienced.
I am Shiva, that eternal knowing and bliss,
love and pure consciousness.

I do not have fear of death,
as I do not have death.
I have no separation from my true self,
no doubt about my existence,
nor have I discrimination on the basis of birth.
I have no father or mother,
nor did I have a birth.
I am not the relative,
nor the friend,
nor the guru,
nor the disciple.
I am Shiva, that eternal knowing and bliss,
love and pure consciousness.

I am all pervasive.
I am without any attributes, and without any form.
I have neither attachment to the world, nor to liberation.
I have no wishes for anything
because I am everything,
everywhere,
every time,
always in equilibrium.
I am Shiva, that eternal knowing and bliss,
love and pure consciousness.

Trust & The Solar Plexus

trust

Third chakra from the bottom is our Solar Plexus. Our seat of Power & Control. And how much in power and control we feel is a measure of how much we trust. In a sense it is paradoxical relationship between the two. The more we trust, the lesser we feel the need to control and by default feel more in control. Power too is related to both control and trust. We use power tocontrol what we are unable to control. Would we need power if we had trust? Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi had (and still do) power over millions but would we call them powerful men? If we have trust the other two simply become redundant.

While looking for an appropriate pictorial quote for this note, I came across so many quotes on trust. The internet is a vast space and this is the first time I have come across so much bullshit in .028 seconds (according to google). Each and every one of the quotes was about, how easily trust is broken (compared to a second, a crumpled piece of paper) or how you should trust in god but lock your car. And even as I realize that if that’s what I’m seeing, I really need to work on my trust issues , I still think it’s bullshit. How can it take a second to break years of trust? All that means is that when it came to the test of trust – you failed. And if doubt sets in after thats just a spiral downward. Sure it feels safe to be protected but you only put the armour on when you expect to be attacked, right? And it’s the same with God and the car. It seems like an oxymoron – trust but don’t trust!

As a friend pointed out recently, if you have trust, if you can trust, then life is sorted isn’t it? It is the flip side of love. Faith. belief, expression hinge on it. You feel completely safe. It really would be a utopian planet wouldn’t it. But the .028 seconds of google search time proves quite the opposite.

The tough question then is the how to? And it is as easy as choosing to. And it is as difficult as walking naked on the street. Because having trust means showing your true self, exposing your underbelly so to speak. Just writing about it is making my solar plexus palpitate (seriously!).
The only thing to do is to say ‘I trust’ till you do!

Inner Light

light within

I followed the light
Trusting it to never lead me astray
It was at a crossroad
that I realized that it lit all roads
And that any road would lead me to my destination
So I walked
I walked
till I knew that the light was within me
So I stilled into the light

Giving is Receiving

giving

The Apple Tree does not look for apples outside itself, intending to glue them to its branches. It brings the apples forth from within its own Self. The Apple Tree holds not on to its apples, neither does it decree who be deserving of them. No, the Apple Tree knows how to give, for it gives indiscriminately – this way, next year, there will be more. The Apple Tree seems to have so much more wisdom than man. It cares not for the fruits of its labour but rejoices in the bringing forth of these. A man or woman, working in this spirit, knows giving IS receiving.

~ Peter O. Erbe – God I Am

So often we give because we are expected or obligated to. Sometimes we give so we are justified in receiving. Some of us refuse to receive because we don’t want to give. If we turn the thought around – every time we give, we say thank you and every time we receive we expect a thank you. Wouldn’t that be easy!
